QUB Chess caters for and welcomes people of all levels of playing ability and interest. Whether you:

1) don’t yet know how to play and want to learn,
2) simply want to enjoy the game recreationally or
3) play competitively in team/individual tournaments,
then you’ll find the club has plenty to offer you. So get involved!

QUB Chess Club reformed in 2005 and has quickly established itself as among the very best and most successful in the University. The club were officially named QUB New Society of the Year in 2006, won the Irish University Championship in 2007, then became Ulster Club Champions in 2008 plus 2009, and finished as the best Irish team at the prestigious European Club Cup in 2008.

However, the club is not all about the relentless pursuit of trophies! We also place a strong emphasis on teaching and playing the game for fun. This is what the regular club meetings are all about, which provide the ideal opportunity to get a taster of the club.

Running quality events is another priority for QUB Chess. The club's flagship event is the annual one day Rapid tournament, which in 2010 had a £1,000 prize fund and attracted players from all over Ireland. The phenomenon of the bar Blitz is also growing, with these popular competitions taking place every couple of months in the Students' Union. These events are well complemented by others such as simultaneous displays, in which Ulster's best players take on all comers and all at once.

If you just want to know a bit more about the game of chess, 3 club members were interviewed by Margaret Hagan for the Another World radio show:

So whether you're interested in playing chess competitively or just for fun, QUB currently provides the best club in Belfast for you. New members - whether connected to QUB or not - are always extremely welcome. If you're interested, e-mail: chrismillar75@hotmail.com.
